Drive the length of the Uists, crossing many causeways en route, and you will eventually reach the beautiful island of Eriskay. Although modestly sized, it is famous for: the wreck of the SS Politican lying off it’s shores (of ‘Whisky Galore’ fame); its beautiful ponies; the landing of Bonnie Prince Charlie on British soil at Prince’s Strand; and the renowned Eriskay gansey.

Inspired by these most elaborately ornamented fishermen’s garments knit by the Eriskay womenfolk, this cosy cowl features both maritime and spiritual motifs. The patterns in this knitting project will delight and hold your interest, but quickly work up into a cosy cowl that will keep out the chill winds of autumn and winter.

This pattern is suitable for any of our DK yarns or 5-ply yarns, when they are available. Inspired by Sian, Fuaran, Sìth, Siaban, Solas or Calma … Why not knit up a collection in different colours?

You will also need: Yarn, 4mm circular needle, 40cm long (or straight needles if you prefer), a stitch marker and a yarn needle

This pattern can be knitted in the round or on straight needles if you prefer.

Experience level: intermediate

The pattern is a PDF download.
